Your rights as a prepaid electricity customer

South African law gives prepaid electricity consumers specific, enforceable protections. Each right links to the relevant section of law.

Eskom Direct customers: If your meter is managed directly by Eskom (not a municipality), you have additional protection, no vendor may charge you a fee for purchasing a prepaid token. Report any vendor fee to Eskom immediately on 0860 037 566.

If you feel any of the above rights have been infringed:

Start by raising the issue in writing with your landlord, body corporate, or electricity supplier. If that does not resolve it, escalate in the correct order: sub-meter provider → municipality → Eskom → ERASA → NERSA.
